What clients actually want from a status update
Clients don't want more emails. They want to know three things at any moment, and a portal answers all three without anyone writing a word.
Every 'any update?' email is really three questions: are you on schedule, what happened this week, and is anything blocked that I should know about.
A weekly email answers them for a week. A portal answers them continuously: milestone status, the approved daily reports and any client-visible issues, whenever the client opens it.
The subtle benefit is the approval step. Nothing reaches the client until a manager has reviewed it, so the portal is calmer and more reliable than the raw feed, and clients learn to trust it.
Companies using the portal report a sharp drop in status-request emails within a month, and more importantly, clients who say the project 'felt under control'.
